The Story Phase (Control Campaign)

Quick Reference

As soon as a game ends, the Story Phase begins. Resolve its six steps in order, with both players present to witness dice rolls.

  1. Treat the Wounded — restore Absent models; roll the Aftermath Table for each Incapacitated model (Champion or Grunt column). A Serious Injury result sends you to the Serious Injury Table. Optionally put models Out to Pasture.
  2. Resolve Story Outcomes — apply each Scenario's Outcomes, then Adjust Control: update Control Total, shed Control above your Control Limit (earns 1 XP, once per phase), optionally move Home Turf.
  3. Clear Chems — remove all Common Chems; keep or sell Rare Chems (+15 Caps each).
  4. Make Story Actions — each crew makes 2 Story Actions (modified by Retreat, Home Turf, and enemy Tier).
  5. Complete a Quest — if all current Quest Goals are done, spend Caps to advance Tier (100 T1→T2, 200 T2→T3, free into retirement).
  6. Finishing Touches — recalculate Reputation (ignore Absent models); increase Games Played by 1.

As soon as a game ends, the Story Phase begins. In this phase, both players resolve the Outcomes of the game and decide what happens with their crew in the period of downtime before their next game. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

The Story Phase should be resolved while both players are present. If either player is required to make any dice rolls, the other player should witness them. The phase has six steps, which are carried out in order. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Step 1 — Treat the Wounded

Each model that was marked as Absent on your Crew Roster before this game becomes available for use again at this point. Remove any Absent marks from their Profile. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Then, each player checks to see whether any of their Incapacitated models suffer any long-term effects. For each model that was Incapacitated during the last game, their player rolls a die and consults the Aftermath Table. Check the Class of the Incapacitated model prior to rolling the die, as each different class rolls on different columns of the table. Should the Serious Injury result be rolled for a model, consult the Serious Injury Table. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Rolls are made one at a time, in an order of the player's choice. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

After resolving each roll on the table, you can choose to put any non-Absent model in your crew Out to Pasture, and remove them from your Crew Roster. That crew's Reputation is reduced by the removed crew member's Rating, but no Caps are added to the crew's Stash. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Aftermath Table

Serious Injury Table

When a model suffers a Serious Injury, roll a die and consult this table. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Score Result Effect
1 Weakened The model's Strength is penalized.
2 Impaired The model's Perception is penalized.
3 Drained The model's Endurance is penalized.
4 Shaken The model's Charisma is penalized.
5 Concussed The model's Intelligence is penalized.
6 Slowed The model's Agility is penalized.
7–10 Resting Up Mark the Absent box on the model's Roster Entry. It will not be able to take part in this Story Phase, or the next game.

[Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Penalized Statistics

It's possible for one of a model's S.P.E.C.I.A.L. statistics to be Penalized by a Serious Injury. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

When this happens, reduce the statistic's value by 1 (to a minimum of 1), then write an asterisk (*) in the same box to show that this is a temporary reduction, which will only last until it is recovered by a Recuperate Story Action (see Story Actions) or special rules. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

If a statistic that is already penalized would be penalized again by a Serious Injury, treat the die as having rolled a 7–10 (Resting Up) instead. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Step 2 — Resolve Story Outcomes

Each Scenario lists one or more Story Outcomes. These are resolved at this step, following the instructions in the Scenario Listing. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

Adjusting Control

The Story Sheet tracks a crew's Control in each of the five Boston Locations. If a Story Outcome causes a crew to gain or lose Control in a Location, increase or decrease the value in that box of the Story Sheet. A crew's Control in a Location cannot go below 0, or below 1 in the Location that is marked as their Home Turf. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

After adjusting a crew's Control, follow these steps in order: [Battle for Boston pg. 44]

  1. Update the crew's Control Total box by totalling their Control across all five Locations. [Battle for Boston pg. 44]
  2. If the crew's Control Total is now higher than their Control Limit, they must reduce the Control in one or more Locations so that this is no longer the case. If they wish, a player can even reduce the Control in the Location where they just gained Control. The crew simply doesn't have the reach to hold that much territory until it reaches the next Tier. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
  3. If the player wishes, they can change their crew's Home Turf to the Location where they have the most Control. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Experience: Location Domination

If a player has to surrender Control in a Location because their Control Total is higher than their Control Limit, their crew earns 1 Experience Point. A crew can only benefit from this rule once per Story Phase. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Step 3 — Clear Chems

All Common Chems are cleared from the crew's Roster. They'll be gone by the time the next game rolls around. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

If a player has any Rare Chems on their Roster, they may either keep them or sell them. Each Rare Chem that is sold is cleared from the Crew Roster, and adds 15 Caps to the crew's Stash. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Step 4 — Make Story Actions

To represent what they are up to in their downtime between fights, each crew can now make two Story Actions. These Actions don't involve the other crew at all, so players can work through them at the same time, but players should make each other aware of the Actions they are choosing and witness each other's dice rolls. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

A full list of Story Actions can be found on the Story Actions page. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Adjusting Story Actions

Several factors can increase or decrease the number of Story Actions that a crew can make: [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

  • If a crew Retreated from the battle, the number of Story Actions it can make is reduced by 1. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
  • If a crew fought a battle on its Home Turf, the number of Story Actions it can make is increased by 1. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
  • If the opposing crew was of a higher Tier, the number of Story Actions is increased by 1, or by 2 if the opposing crew was two Tiers higher. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
  • Some Scenario Outcomes allow crews to make free Story Actions, which are in addition to the two they can normally make. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Step 5 — Complete a Quest

If a player has achieved all of the Goals for their current Quest, they may now complete it and advance to the next Tier by spending Caps. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

It costs 100 Caps to advance from Tier 1 to Tier 2, and 200 Caps to advance from Tier 2 to Tier 3. It does not cost anything to advance from Tier 3 into retirement, but this is a mandatory step when all of the Tier 3 Quest's Goals have been completed. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

If a player wishes to Complete their Quest, they follow these steps: [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

  1. Spend the required number of Caps from the crew's Stash. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
  2. Check the next "Tier" box on the crew Roster. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
  3. Adjust the Crew Limits section of the Story Page in line with the crew's new Tier (as shown on their Faction List). [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
  4. Copy the Goals for the next Quest in the Quest Line onto the Story Sheet. Alternatively, the player can spend 50 Caps to switch to a different Quest Line available to their Faction, and copy across the Goals from the relevant Tier. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Finishing the Story

Once a crew has completed its third Quest, its story is complete. Its Leader has carved out a place for themselves amidst the high and mighty of their Faction, or has perhaps left in search of a new adventure. However, the player can create a new Legacy Crew around one of its Champions, and bring a few Grunts along for the ride. This is explained in the Recruit / Legacy Crew rules on the Story Actions page. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Step 6 — Finishing Touches

Recalculate the crew's Reputation by adding together the Rating values of all of its models. Do not count any models that are marked as Absent. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]

Increase the "Games Played" count on the Crew Roster by 1. The Story Phase is now complete. [Battle for Boston pg. 45]
